A person who laced candy with sleeping medication and distributed them to children at a youth camp in the area has confessed to sexual offences against two young males aged between nine and ten.

Jon Ruben was arrested after eight minors and a grown-up fell ill at Stathern Lodge in July.

The senior citizen, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, admitted guilt to a total of 17 charges when he appeared at the courthouse on the end of the week.

However, he denied a single sexual charge he was charged with, which was involving a nine-year-old boy.

The accused was kept in jail before a additional proceeding on November 28th.

'Candy game'

Mary Prior KC, prosecuting, outlined the defendant's actions to the judicial body.

She stated his targets were under-privileged children who were staying at a youth camp which he operated.

Ruben conducted a "candy game" with the children, the prosecutor stated, in which he would go into the children's bedrooms when they were getting ready for bed and ask them to consume candy "as quickly as they can".

She informed the proceedings the defendant had engaged in this activity with the children "for many years", and minors had earlier experienced illness the following morning.

She stated the man had been able to explain this repeatedly as the children being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepchild had worries in July 2025.

The legal representative stated further: "In the summer" his stepson had suspicions about what was going on, for good reason.

"They chose" to examine in the individual's items."

The legal counsel stated objects including lubricant, Vaseline and syringes were found, and his stepson contacted the authorities about his suspicions.

She said Ruben continued to engage in the "treat game" with six youngsters that night - Saturday 26 July - and they were all ill the following morning.

"Authorities" had not arrived by that time," she added.

The oversight body, the investigative body, previously told that it was examining law enforcement's management of the situation.

Mrs Prior explained the children were unable to walk properly due to their condition, so Ruben's stepson called the law enforcement again.

She said the man then conducted the "sweet game" in a area of five children.
