A bettor earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was made public, sparking debate about potential gains made from confidential information of the event.

Market Movement in Predictions

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be removed from office by the end of January rose in the time leading up to Donald Trump stated on the weekend that the president had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which registered on the site in December and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $436K from a modest bet of $32,537.

It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Market Signals Before News Break

Market statistics shows that participants assessed the probability of a political change at just 6.5% in the midday period of the prior Friday.

However the odds had jumped to over 10% by shortly before midnight and surged in the first hours of January 3rd, indicating a sharp shift in positions immediately prior to the official statement was made.

"This particular bet has all the signs of a bet based on non-public details," commented a financial reform advocate.

A small number of other individuals also made significant sums from bets on the same outcome.

Regulatory Scrutiny Grows

Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.

Proposed legislation introduced on Monday would prevent federal workers from participating on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a wager.

Market Background

Event-driven betting sites have grown significantly in the United States, with participants able to wager on everything from sports to current affairs.

The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the last presidential term. But it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market space.

A company executive for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against trading on insider information of any form."
